Anna Bonitatibus offers exemplary interpretations throughout, and even renders the apocalyptic prospect of Orlando paladino attractive; but it’s the haughtiness of “Ho un tumore in un ginocchio” that is most entertaining, the heroine’s bogus sickness suggested by the dainty tunefulness with which she feigns a coughing fit.

This generous compilation is the product of a novel and amusing idea to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Handel’s death. Excerpts from 11 operas and two oratorios recorded and released between 1986 and 2008 and spanning thirty-five years of Handel’s prodigious output, have been assembled to recreate a kind of facsimile opera typical of the 38 he wrote during his long and (mostly) successful career. It is an idea by no means entirely foreign or indeed to inimical to the composer himself; Handel frequently stitched together “pasticcios” from his works and some of his most celebrated creations are as much as 75% re-cycled musical material. Likewise, his star singers were used to producing an “aria di baule” (“trunk-aria”) as and when required, to be inserted willy-nilly into the opera being performed simply because it was a current favourite with the public.

Anna Bonitatibus’s singing is magnificent “Quell’onda che si frange” is deliciously sung, and her ornamentation and cadenza are fabulous.

GRAMOPHONE

Somewhat strangely, Elisa has the most arias. She sings of murmuring waves, flowers and gentle breezes, and had one not read the story beforehand one might have thought what a nice lady she was. One would be wrong. In Scene 5 of Act Two she urges Alessandro to kill Tolomeo by “ripping open his breast”. Bonitatibus has the measure of the role, be it expressing sweetness and light or voicing Elisa’s baser emotions. She experiences no difficulties in Handel’s frequently involved figurations and reveals Elisa as the most varied character.

Anna Bonitatibus sings with plenty of spirit‚ accuracy and broad phrasing as Irene‚ and she is graceful in her Act 2 aria (where Handel uses clarinets).
Published by Gramophone Magazine, July 2002

The shining feature of the cast is, without any shadow of doubt, is Anna Bonitatibus, whose lovely voice is not only more sensuous than this performance's prima donna's, but also more solid and impressive than this performance's primo uomo.
