Agrippina, Handel – The Grange Festival – Mark Aspen

The award winning Italian mezzo has a velvety richness in her vocalisation that suggests the lubricious legerdemain that Agrippina is well-versed in using to her advantage. From her opening recitative, instructing Nerone, “la tua fortuna prender potrai pe’l crine, ed arrestarla”, we see a woman who will use any means, from crocodile tears to knife-in-back, to gain power and keep it.

Il mezzosoprano sa destreggiarsi con proprietà di linguaggio attraverso le epoche, scandagliando con fraseggio soppesato i testi e mettendo a frutto la scaltrezza tecnica, fondata su canto a fior di labbra, colorature sgranate, messe di voce omogenee e millmetriche (memorabile quella che apre l’aria di Tancredi!); doti belcantistiche che si rivelano una risorsa preziosa anche nel canto spiegato richiesto dagli autori fin de siècle.
